Campground Party Food Calculator — How It Works
Overview
The Campground Party Food Calculator helps RV campers, group campers, and outdoor hosts estimate food quantities for campground parties and group gatherings. Instead of guessing how much food to buy for a group, this tool calculates recommended amounts based on the number of adults and children, the number of days, and the type of party.
Core Formula
Child-Adjustment Factor
Adjusted People = Adults + (Children × 0.5)
Children eat approximately half of an adult portion, so each child is counted as 0.5 adults for quantity calculations.
Example: 10 adults + 4 children = 10 + (4 × 0.5) = 12 adjusted people
Item Quantity
Item Quantity = (Per-Adult Rate × Adults + Per-Child Rate × Children) × Days
Each food item has predefined per-person rates for both adults and children. The tool multiplies these rates by the number of people and days to generate recommended quantities.
Example (BBQ Mode):
You’re hosting a 1-day BBQ for 10 adults and 5 children. Burger patties have a rate of 1.5 per adult and 0.75 per child.
(1.5 × 10 + 0.75 × 5) × 1 = (15 + 3.75) = 18.75 → 19 patties
Smart Rounding
Different food types use different rounding rules:
| Unit Type | Rounding Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pieces, Patties, Buns, Ears, Slices, Strips, Leaves, Shells | Round up to nearest whole | 18.75 → 19 |
| Lbs, Cups (bulk items) | Round to nearest 0.25 | 2.33 → 2.25 lbs |
| Bottles, Jars, Containers, Bunches, Bags (packaged items) | Minimum 1, round up | 0.6 → 1 bottle |
| Condiments (ketchup, mustard, etc.) | Always 1 per group | — |
